Aaron Lazar - Summer Newsletter 2013
Hi, folks! From the wonder of early morning summer walks in the Genesee Valley and an abundance of vegetables and fruits in the garden this year, it's been a very good summer. The grandkids have been over to swim in our little pool, we took a trip to Cape Cod for the first time in nine years, and everyone's been relatively healthy at home. In addition, I was honored to meet Mr. Warren Adler in NYC last month. (see below for details!)
As far as books go, I'm almost done with my twenty-first book. This one is a new style for me. It's a love story, a romantic suspense set on Cape Cod. If you enjoyed the romantic elements in the Tall Pines Mysteries, you might like THE SEACREST, coming this fall. I'll reveal the cover in the next newsletter. ;o)
I also finished the fourth book in the Tall Pines Mysteries, MURDER ON THE SACANDAGA. It won't be out for a little while, since we have to release book three first! SANCTUARY will be out next spring.
All of my books are now in audio book format, including the new writing books. You can listen to samples from all of them here. You might especially enjoy hearing my newest narrator, Mr. George Kuch. I've been told his voice is pure velvet!
If you have any questions about getting the books in any format, don't hesitate to ask.
Meeting Mr. Warren Adler - What an Honor!I was astounded when I learned I'd won a contest entitled "What Reading Means to Me," sponsored by none other than the well-renowned Mr. Warren Adler, author of War of the Roses and many other best sellers. The prize was a two-day trip to NYC and lunch with Mr. Adler at the Century Association, a historical literary club. I had the most delightful time with Mr. Adler, and we connected on many levels, chatting for hours about books, life, and the industry. What made my day, literally, was when he called me a "real writer," not once, but twice. Talk about feeling validated... Aside from my lunch with Mr. Adler, I walked around Central Park (7 miles!) one morning, and saw "Newsies" with daughter Melanie, who came down from Boston to meet me. Although it was close to 100 degrees during the day, we had a lovely time and even enjoyed some special tempura at a Japanese restaurant in Manhattan. I'll never forget the trip, or the incredible joy of meeting this generous and delightful author.
Book Signing 8-17-13If you are free on Saturday, August 17th, consider coming down to Heron Hill Winery on Keuka Lake to join me for a glass of Riesling and some good conversation. I'll have most of my books there to sign and sell, plus free bookmarks and chocolate! Hope to see you there.

DON'T LET THE WIND CATCH YOU: A Gus LeGarde Mystery (BOOK 6)It's been a long time coming, but DON'T LET THE WIND CATCH YOU, the sequel to TREMOLO: CRY OF THE LOON, is here! If you enjoy eBooks and plan to buy the new Kindle version, please consider downloading it on August 15th or 16th, when my publisher will be discounting the price from $4.99 to $2.99.
We're trying to use this time frame for what is known in industry as a "book blast" or "book bomb" to help drive the Amazon numbers to number 1.
Will you help? If you don't read eBooks yet, consider "gifting" this to someone you love who does! It is suitable for young adults through mature adults and has seemed to appeal to a wide range of readers to date.
The new eBook is already up on Barnes and Noble, if you're a Nook reader. The print and audio books will be available in another few months, probably mid-November, so for those of you who prefer to hold the book in your hands or listen to an actor read to you, never fear, they are both on their way!
DON'T LET THE WIND CATCH YOU: A Gus LeGarde Mystery
When young Gus LeGarde befriends a cranky old hermit in the woods who speaks to an Oneida Indian spirit named Penaki, he wonders if the man is nuts. But when Penni rattles tin cups, draws on dusty mirrors, and flips book pages, pestering them to find evidence to avenge her past and free her from earthly bondage, things change.
What Gus doesn’t understand is why his mother hates Tully. His relentless digging reveals a hint of scandal about Tully and Gus’s maternal grandfather, Marlowe Wright. Can his natural compassion help him accept the not-so-normal facts about Tully and Marlowe?
On horseback, Gus and his friends ride through woods overlooking Conesus Lake, following Penni’s trail to an abandoned house reportedly infected with the deadly Genesee Valley Fever from the 1700s. Unafraid, they enter and make an astounding find that could rewrite history.
Gus summons courage beyond his years in this poignant and powerful telling of the sultry summer of 1965.

Here are a few blurbs from advanced reviewers:
"I decided to review this book almost for the forbidden, chocolate-covered cherry deliciousness of it. A wallow in mystery, another era, the mid-1960s, a gorgeous upstate New York region, a new take on what could be a shameful moment in Colonial American history." - Noelle Sterne, author of Trust Your Life: Forgive Yourself and Go After Your Dreams (www.trustyourlifenow.com)
"A truly beautiful coming of age story...Lazar also throws in a lesson to the reader as he takes an issue that is prevalent in today’s society and deals with it in a sensitive way through the eyes of a young boy whose innocence has not yet been tainted by the prejudices of our world today." - Cindy Taylor, allbooksreviewsint.com
"Rarely has an author given us such insight into a single character through a book series... As always, the writing is beautiful and delicate, rich with musical influence – in this case, the music of the 1960s, with the lovely local setting of the Genesee Valley. There are touches of history too as we learn about the Groveland Ambuscade...Despite the serious issues that the book addresses, this is as suitable for a young adult reader as for an adult, and will appeal to wide audience. It’s clear that Lazar has come to know and love his characters and every time he revisits them, he brings out new nuances and depths, so that returning to a Gus Lazar mystery is like meeting an old friend once again." - Magdalena Ball, CompulsiveReader.com

Aaron Paul Lazar wasn’t always a mystery writer. It wasn’t until eight members of his family and friends died within five years that the urge to write became overwhelming. “When my father died, I lost it. I needed an outlet, and writing provided the kind of solace I couldn’t find elsewhere.”
Lazar created the Gus LeGarde mystery series, with the founding novel, DOUBLE FORTÉ (2004), a chilling winter mystery set in the Genesee Valley of upstate New York. Like Lazar’s father, protagonist Gus LeGarde is a classical music professor. Gus, a grandfather, gardener, chef, and nature lover, plays Chopin etudes to feed his soul and thinks of himself as a “Renaissance man caught in the 21st century.”
The creation of the series lent Lazar the comfort he sought, yet in the process, a new passion was unleashed. Obsessed with his parallel universe, he now lives, breathes, and dreams about his characters, and has written ten LeGarde mysteries in eight years. (UPSTAGED – 2005; TREMOLO: CRY OF THE LOON – 2007 Twilight Times Books; MAZURKA – 2009 Twilight Times Books, FIRESONG – 2011, with more to come.) The author is currently working on his sixteenth novel.
One day while rototilling his gardens, Lazar unearthed a green cat’s eye marble, which prompted the new paranormal mystery series featuring Sam Moore, retired country doctor and passionate gardener. The green marble, a powerful talisman, connects all three of the books in the series, whisking Sam back in time to uncover his brother’s dreadful fate fifty years earlier. (HEALEY’S CAVE, 2010; TERROR COMES KNOCKING, 2011; FOR KEEPS, 2012) Lazar intends to continue both series.
Lazar’s books feature breathless chase scenes, nasty villains, and taut suspense, but are also intensely human stories, replete with kids, dogs, horses, food, romance, and humor. The author calls them, “country mysteries,” although reviewers have dubbed them “literary mysteries.”
“It seems as though every image ever impressed upon my brain finds its way into my work. Whether it’s the light dancing through stained-glass windows in a Parisian chapel, curly slate-green lichenMaine, or hoarfrost dangling from a cherry tree branch in mid-winter, these images burrow into my memory cells. In time they bubble back, persistently itching, until they are poured out on the page.” covering a boulder at the edge of a pond in
In 2009, Kodak gave him up for grabs, and during the year off before he landed in his coveted new job with KB America, he had time to explore and reconnect with his environment. Little did he know that several trips to the Adirondack Mountains would reawaken his passion for that part of the country. Two new books were written in that timeframe, starting yet another mystery series, Tall Pines Mysteries. The first two books in the series are due out in the late 2011 early 2012 timeframe. Watch for FOR THE BIRDS and ESSENTIALLY YOURS, coming soon.
The author lives on a ridge overlooking the Genesee Valley in upstate New York with his wife, mother-in-law, two dogs, and cat. He finds grandfathering one of the most precious and important times of life, and spends as much time as possible with Julian, Gordon, Aiden, and Isabella.
Lazar maintains several websites and blogs, was the Gather Saturday Writing Essential host for three years, writes his monthly “Seedlings” columns for the Voice in the Dark literary journal and the Future Mystery Anthology Magazine. He has been published in Absolute Write as well as The Great Mystery and Suspense Magazine. See excerpts and reviews here:

Double Forte' is a chilling mystery set in the verdant landscape of Upstate New York's Genesee Valley. Packed with memorable characters, hair-raising chase scenes, and touching family moments, it's a solid page-turner.
Desolate over his wife's suicide four years earlier, small-town college professor Gus LeGarde faces bewildering emotions when he falls for Camille, the vivacious, dark-eyed daughter of his secretary. Yet troubling events in her past cause her to rebuff Gus's affections. Romance glimmers, however, as both become embroiled in an adventure when Gus discovers a mute child shackled to a bedpost in a secluded cabin.
The mystery turns deadly when the child's kidnapper escapes on a snowmobile that tumbles into the deep Letchworth Gorge. The villain's fate is questioned when Gus's little grandson disappears and threats arrive against Camille. And where is the business partner of Gus's philandering son-in-law? Does a murderer lurk in the dark, wintry woods?
In Upstaged, the second book in the LeGarde Mystery Series, Gus LeGarde is in for another wild ride as he faces a disturbed stage mother, a deviant predator, and a twisted saboteur who lurks backstage, terrorizing the drama club with deadly, psychotic games.
Who's playing bizarre pranks on Gus's fiancée, Camille? Gus suspects handsome Brazilian student, Armand, whose behavior is laced with sexual improprieties. His suspicion shifts as a jealous stage-mother goes berserk when her daughter isn't cast in the lead role. As the attacks escalate, even the school superintendent is questioned when it's learned that his shadowy past is sealed in an official file.
The action turns lethal as opening night approaches. A sniper fires shots. Camille's home is ransacked and her beloved dog is missing. The star performer takes a bone-shattering fall when the stage railing mysteriously falls apart. Was the set rigged? Will Gus prevent the villain from upstaging the show?
Tremolo: cry of the loon
Summer, 1964: Beatlemania hits the States, and the world mourns the loss of JFK. For eleven-year-old Gus LeGarde, the powerful events that rocked the nation serve as a backdrop for the most challenging summer of his life.
After Gus and his best friends capsize their boat at his grandparents’ lakeside camp, they witness a drunk chasing a girl through the foggy Maine woods. She’s scared. She’s hurt. And she disappears.
The camp is thrown into turmoil as the frantic search for Sharon begins. Reports of stolen relics arise, including a church bell cast by Paul Revere. When Gus and his friends stumble on a scepter that may be part of the spoils, they become targets for the evil lurking around the lake. Will they find Sharon before the villain does? And how can Gus–armed only with a big heart, a motorboat, and a nosy beagle–survive the menacing attacks on his life?
When Siegfried receives a puzzling invitation to visit an ailing relative in Germany on the eve of Gus and Camille’s wedding, their honeymoon plans change. Siegfried – Gus’s socially challenged brother-in-law – can’t travel alone, so they gather the gentle giant under their wings and fly to Paris.
After luscious hours in the city of lights, a twist of fate propels them into a deadly web of neo-Nazis. A bloody brawl on the Champs Élysées thrusts Siegfried and Gus into the news, where a flawed report casts Siegfried as the Nazi leader’s murderer, sealing his death warrant.
While Siegfried recovers in a Parisian hospital, Nazi terrorists stalk Gus and Camille. Hunted and left for dead in the underground Parisian Catacombs among millions of Frenchmen’s bones, they barely escape. Siegfried is moved to safety at his aunt’s in Denkendorf, where he learns a shocking family secret about Chopin’s steamy past.
The calm is soon shattered, when the threesome is plunged into a cat-and-mouse game where the stakes are lethal and the future of Europe hangs in the balance.
